Have you ever helped a family or individual
with a place to stay when they have been evicted from housing? If
you’ve given to United Way you have. Have you ever fed a family
three meals a day that didn’t have food to eat? If you’ve given to
United Way you have. With the services at Peachtree Landing,
families are provided a warm place to sleep, a hot meal, and the
support they need to help move from homelessness to
self-sufficiency.
“Building a better community” starts with a
basic foundation of giving hope and support for homeless families
and individuals. There is a continuing need in our community for
temporary emergency services. Whatever the reason for homelessness,
food and shelter are basic human requirements which must be supplied
while rebuilding is under way. Rebuilding individuals and families
to self sufficiency is where Peachtree Landing begins.
The mission of Peachtree Landing is to offer
temporary emergency shelter and food and make the necessary
referrals to other social services to answer the immediate needs of
homeless families and individuals while helping them to become self
sufficient.
Admission to the emergency homeless shelter is
limited to families and single females who have an immediate need
for shelter and no reasonable means for obtaining permanent
housing. In the next step for families towards permanent housing,
Peachtree Landing operates a six unit transitional living apartment
building, which is available to assist the homeless in making the
transition from homelessness to independent living. Life Skills
classes and case management are critical to making this change.
While meeting the immediate need for food and shelter, Peachtree
Landing provides a variety of services: persons staying in shelter
are offered continuing education classes which teach basic life
skills such as; money management, food and nutrition, parenting, and
health and recreation. All of these services and more are directed
at rebuilding lives.
The 15 member agencies supported by United Way
of Ponca City work together like a construction crew each program
building on the other. These agencies each provide services to help
build a better community one person and one family at a time. “With
the help of United Way and Peachtree Landing we are able to provide
shelter and food for homeless families and individuals,” says
Carmaleta Wesbrook, executive director.
Peachtree Landing is governed by a volunteer
board of director’s. Funding for the shelter is provided by United
Way, community events, My Favorite Things Resale Shop, local
churches, individual contributions, state and federal grants, and
private foundations. To learn more about Peachtree Landing or if
