What is Success By 6 Smart
Start Kay County?
Smart Start
Oklahoma is a grassroots initiative that supports families as they
raise children who are safe, healthy, eager to learn and ready to
succeed in school. By making local civic and business leaders,
educators and volunteers aware of children’s needs, and by
collaborating with local service providers, Smart Start makes better
use of programs or resources that already exist. There are
currently 18 Smart Start Oklahoma communities, including Smart Start
Kay County.
Thru a Bank of America grant in
1999, the first Success By 6 Early Childhood Planning Council formed
to meet gaps in services for families with children birth to six.
That program has grown to a statewide initiative funded in part by
the Oklahoma Partnership for School Readiness to meet the needs of
our children and families birth to six.
Projects
in Kay County include:
-
Implementation of Raising a Reader, “Cuddle
Up and Read” Literacy Campaign, and the Healthy Reader
Project to put books in the hands of children and families.
Reading provides families the opportunity to support children in
their learning process of forming attachments, as well as
instilling the love of learning through books.
-
Community Forums
to address domestic violence, child abuse, steps in healthy
child development, and developmental milestones of speech and
language skills.
-
Dental screenings
for children to age 6, in partnership with local dentists,
health departments and childcare centers. A dental poster
campaign for children ages 3-6 to encourage dental health.
Monthly child friendly bookmarks with activities and tips
for healthy gums and teeth for childcare facilities, health
departments, and dental offices.
-
Hope for Tomorrow
Workshops on mental health education to provide
information and life skills training to equip parents, teachers,
and the community with skills to better deal with life today and
tomorrow through mental well-being.
-
Character Critters©
one of the Character Education Programs offered by the
Cooperative Extension Service teaching six concepts of
character: responsibility, trustworthiness, respect, caring,
fairness, and citizenship. This program has been implemented in
childcare homes, childcare centers, and public schools.
-
“I Can Problem Solve” an interpersonal,
cognitive, problem-solving program also offered by the
Cooperative Extension Service beginning in the public schools,
then moving to childcare centers and homes. The goal of
Character Critters© and I Can Problem Solve is to
help build the thinking child and have children embody traits
that build the work ethic of future students, employees, and
parents.
