Frequently asked questions????????
What is an Education Award?
Education awards (sometimes referred to as ed. awards) are vouchers
not cash provided to AmeriCorps members upon successful completion of a
service term. The award is to repay qualified student loans or to pay for the
“cost of an education” for future attendance at a Title IV institution of higher
education. Education awards retain their value for 7 years. Any portion of the
total amount may be used.
How long is a Service
Year?
A service or program year is from September 1, 2006 to August 31, 2007.
The completion of the goal of 1700, 900 or 300 hours does not complete a service
year. A service year is 12 months, September to August.
Can I have another job
while serving in AmeriCorps?
Yes, if you are serving in the United Way/AmeriCorps State Program. It
is possible to have a limited part time job in addition to AmeriCorps State
service as long as the Site Supervisor and Program Director approve and the
second job does not conflict with AmeriCorps interests or schedule including
training and project dates.
Can I go to school
while I am serving as an AmeriCorps member?
A full time member is limited to no more than 9 hours of courses and only
with Program Director approval.
Will I receive any
personal or sick leave?
No personal, family or sick leave is scheduled. Family leave applies
after a year of service. In the event that an extenuating circumstance occurs,
arrangements should be made through the Site Supervisor.
Two terms of service
allowed?
A successful member may serve only two terms or service years.
